It is partly due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum in person (Brown University) In my opinion, educational programs should incorporate studies in art along with other areas of study. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned obtained an MA in 1967, and also the Ph.D. earned from UCLA. It's not a surprise that the ethnomusicology department at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is housed in the College of Letters and Science's Department of Music. It's fun to pursue multiple subjects. Also, I like looking at the whole picture. Students from both undergraduate and graduate levels (for whom I wrote three textbooks - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) are enthused by my teaching. I also have times where I'm the sole professor and other periods in which I work in the administrative department (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Director of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
